How to file & take the next FDNY exam

To file for the FDNY exam and then take the 2024 FDNY exam being held in the fall of 2024, applicants must follow the below steps and rules in order to be considered a candidate for the New York City Fire Department:

The Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) has announced that the application period for the FDNY exam is starting on June 24, 2024. The applications will be available and accepted online at the DCAS website.

Step 1: The two key web pages to browse for this process are (1) Applying for an Exam — Department of Citywide Administrative Services (nyc.gov) which gives excellent information on how the computer-based testing system works and then to apply for the FDNY Exam (2) OASys — OASys (nyc.gov).

Computer-based Testing & Applications Centers (CTACs): The CTACs make available to the public year-round access to computer-administered exams for City jobs in the following locations:

Bronx CTAC

Manhattan CTAC

Test centers are open Monday through Friday, 9am — 5pm, except for City holidays. Here are travel directions to the CTACs.

At that point in time (June 24, 2024) candidates can go to that website and fill out an application for the FDNY exam. The application period typically runs over 2 months; however, we suggest that you file within the first day or two during the application period.

These exams are administered on specific dates at the DCAS testing centers and are scheduled in advance. Admission notices are emailed two to three weeks before the testing period. The admission notice provides the test date, location, and other information. The FDNY exam is scheduled to be held in the Fall of 2024.

Step 2: Prepare for the FDNY exam through various sources and means. The FDNY exam is expected to attract over 20,000 applicants which means the FDNY exam is very competitive. Preparation such as learning test taking techniques and taking practice exams can great benefit you and possibly give you the edge over your competitors (The other applicants siting for the exam). Step 3: During the Fall 2024 you will be called by appointment to take the computerized FDNY Exam at one of the DCAS testing centers. These exams are administered on specific dates at DCAS testing centers and are scheduled in advance. Admission notices are emailed two to three weeks before the testing period.
