Basic Requirements to Appear in The Suffolk Police Exams

With the Suffolk County Police exams drawing nearer, more and more individuals are applying to appear in the exams. After all, civil servant jobs are highly sought after in the US due to the lucrative income, various benefits, and incentives they offer. Additionally, for most, serving their communities is a significant honor that can’t be replicated.

Unfortunately, many people don’t get to achieve this dream.

It usually happens when individuals don’t pay attention to the requirements. In this way, they miss crucial details to be eligible to sit in the exam. This can be detrimental to their future as the window of opportunity is small, with the exam only occurring every 4-6 years.

That’s why, in this blog, we’re discussing the various requirements you need to take into account before appearing in the Suffolk police exams.

Keep reading to find out more.

Do You Need a Degree Before Appearing in The Exam?

Becoming a Suffolk County police officer is a dream job for many. However, a lot of individuals are hesitant to apply for the opportunity. That’s because they think there might be too many requirements for the exam, especially when it comes to degrees. Fortunately, the reality is far from it.

As a matter of fact, you don’t need any college credits or degrees to appear for the Suffolk police test. Individuals interested in applying, only need a standard senior high school diploma. However, an equivalent is acceptable— provided it is recognized by the New York State Department of Education before the date of the applicant’s appointment.

In case, an individual has neither of those diplomas, they can still appear if they have a General Educational Development (GED) credential.

Are You Required to Have Any Licenses?

When it comes to licenses, applicants don’t need a lot of them to apply for the Suffolk County Police exam. As a matter of fact, aspirants are only required to be in possession of a valid New York State driver’s license.

That being said, the license is not mandatory for the candidates at the time of taking the exam. Instead, individuals can get one by the time of their appointment. If an individual not in possession of one, they have a lot of time to apply for it.

All they have to do is visit the New York DMV office and apply for a learner’s permit to take a written test. This will allow them to enroll in a driver’s education course required for a road test. All this can be a lengthy process. It is why we recommend you get a license before the exam to ensure you can possess it.

Are There Any Age Limitations?

We have already discussed that applying for the Suffolk County exam is a limited opportunity as it occurs every 4-6 years. The stakes are further escalated due to the age requirements. Unfortunately, those interested in applying for the Suffolk County Police test must be no younger than 19 and no older than 34 at the time of the exam.

It means that applicants must already be a few months older than 19 by the time they appear in the exams. On the other hand, individuals who have turned 35 before or on the date of the exams won’t be eligible to appear. This criterion remains true even for people who applied for the test before they turned 35.

The requirement can significantly limit individuals, especially those who didn’t get high marks on the test the previous time. That’s because though applicants need at least 70% to pass the exams, people with 90 or more are far more successful in getting appointed. So, it increases the need to score higher on the test.

It is the reason why we recommend enrolling in a preparatory school to be thoroughly ready for the exam. The courses and materials offered (especially at Civil Service Success) are designed to ensure students get high scores. This gives them an edge over other candidates and ensures they land the job they want.

What Are the Citizenship Requirements?

Applicants for the Suffolk County Police exam are required to be citizens of the United States. In saying that, this rule is only set on the date of appointment. This means that if an individual is in the naturalization process for citizenship, they can still apply. However, it’s important to note that they must be citizens so it’s better to be sure if one will be done with the naturalization process prior to the appointment.

Can Residents of Other Places Apply?

Even though serving in the Suffolk County Police Department is a significant honor for most, the opportunity is not available for everyone. This includes residents of other areas.

In fact, people who are valid residents of Suffolk County are considered eligible to appear in the test. That being said, residents of New York City and Nassau can also apply for the police exam.
