Good Salary

NYPD workers are paid good salaries for all positions. As soon as you’ve been selected for NYPD, you are eligible for the full salary and benefits. Currently, the average salary of NYPD workers is $25,100 per annum which increases to $32,700 upon confirmation.

NYPD members are given an appraisal every year and their pay increases to $59,588 after 5.5 years. Apart from the basic salary, they also get to enjoy other benefits such as overtime earning, holiday pay, night differential and uniform allowance.

Educational Opportunities

You can also expect many educational opportunities associated with your career. For instance, NYPD members receive 29 college credits for their academy training and they can also obtain a degree on its basis because many colleges consider them equal to two semesters.

For undergraduate opportunities, there are 71 scholarships in prestigious schools for NYPD members. There are 6 Scholarships and 9 tuition reduction programs as well for graduate candidates associated with NYPD.

Military Benefits

The NYPD offers excellent opportunities for candidates with a military background. However, military candidates who wish to join as officers must also have Sixty (60) college credits with a 2.0 GPA.

Alternatively, they can also apply on the basis of Two (2) years of full-time, active military service.  The veterans between the ages 35 and 39 are also allowed to reduce up to six years of age from their age depending on the number of years they have served in the military.G.I Bill Benefits

Candidates who are still attending the academy are also entitled to G.I. Bill Benefits. However, if a veteran’s duty period exceeds three years, they can also receive $ 1,034.00 per month while they are still at the academy.

They are also entitled to receive $878.90 per month during the 6 months that follow the Academy, and $672.50 per month during the next six months to come. For the remaining six months, they are paid $465.30 per month.

Select Reservists are sometimes also eligible for G.I. Bill Benefits that are collected in bonus to the bases salary. Candidates can learn more about the base salary on the G.I. Bill website.

Benefits for Veterans in NYPD

For veterans who are residents of the New York State, NYPD also offers 5 additional veteran points that they can use when they are applying for their final test score. Candidates who choose not to use these points at this point for entrance exam can use 2.5 for any future promotional exam they might appear for.

For Veterans who possess medal for their services in supporting U.S. military conflict will be allowed to buy back three years of the time when they are applying for retirement from NYPD. This means that such veterans can collect their 20-year NYPD pension even if they serve for just 17 years in the department.

All reservists who wish to join NYPD can wait for up to 5 years of military leave if they present their military orders from the branch that handles their affairs. All time that is served in helping U.S military is also considered part of service to NYPD..

Candidates who are military personnel and successfully pass the Police Officer written exam can expedite the hiring process using the NYPD’s Quest Program (Quick Efficient Standardized Testing). This program is designed specifically for the out-station candidates and it allows them to appear for all the standardized tests during just one visit to New York. From candidate screening to medical, psychological and physical agility tests, everything will be done in just one visit.

As for those police officers who are also reservists, they entitled to 30 paid calendar leaves every year apart from their allotted vacation time. They are entitled for complete payment and benefits for this period from both NYPD and military.

Veterans who have served in Armed forces and are in the Reserves are entitled to benefit from both Veterans Day and Memorial Day holidays. Moreover, veterans who have retired from the military are entitled for the Independence Day holiday as well.

In case a military personnel fails to appear for the test after application because they are deployed, they are allowed to request for a rescheduling. However, they will be required to present a proof of their deployment orders.

Apart from these benefits of working in NYPD, there are many other exclusive benefits. For instance, all NYPD members are entitled to receive 20 Paid vacation days during their first year of service. After five years of service, they can also avail paid vacations. They are also entitled to unlimited sick leaves with complete payment and benefits. All candidates  benefit from Annuity fund, Deferred Compensation Plan, Optional retirement at one half salary once they complete 20 years of service, Annual $12,000 Variable Supplement Fund on their retirement, Annual banking of $12,000 Variable Supplement Fund after the completion of 20 years of service and much more.
