A Suffolk County Police Officer is responsible for protecting the lives and property of residents and visitors throughout Suffolk County, New York. Officers enforce federal, state, and local laws, respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, investigate crimes and accidents, and work to maintain public safety and order within the community.
Key responsibilities include:
- Patrolling assigned areas by vehicle, foot, bicycle, or other means to deter crime and identify suspicious activity.
- Responding to emergency situations, including crimes in progress, traffic accidents, medical emergencies, and public disturbances.
- Conducting criminal investigations by gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses and suspects, preparing reports, and making arrests when necessary.
- Enforcing traffic laws, issuing summonses, directing traffic, and investigating motor vehicle collisions.
- Assisting victims of crime and providing support during emergencies and crisis situations.
- Working collaboratively with community members, schools, businesses, and other government agencies to address public safety concerns.
- Testifying in court regarding arrests, investigations, and evidence collected during police duties.
- Maintaining accurate records, reports, and documentation related to incidents and investigations.
- Participating in specialized assignments such as marine patrol, aviation, K-9 operations, detective investigations, emergency services, community policing, or other specialized units.
The position requires sound judgment, strong communication skills, physical fitness, integrity, and the ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations.
